they are ordering a comprehensive review you whatever that means of boeing's new line of 787 dreamliners in the wake of technical problems. on tuesday, a japan airlines dreamliner spilled about 40-gallons of crew moments before it was set it to take off. they call it a maintenance issue. that was the day after a fire broke out in the belly of a different airliner at logan filling that cab bin with smoke. dan springer is in the pacific northwest home of boeing. a review like this isn't so rare, is it? >> actually it is, shep. an aviation analyst we spoke with here in seattle says it is very unusual and hasn't happened since 1979. as for passenger safety we will have to see what the final report says. meantime the planes will continue to fly. the fire monday in boston triggered the action. a lithium battery which powers the plane when the engines are off overheated. there was a lot of smoke and eventually fire and this follows three electrical problems in december that either grounded planes or diverted flights. the comprehensive review will focus in on the dreamliner entire electrical system. >> this

considering in just two days from now the boeing 787 made its debut flight from sjc. it will do so with a sold out fight. sold out means 158 passengers will board the dream liner at sjc bound for narita airport. in light of the problems the high tech dream liner has been working through. the aircraft debuted with all nipon airways in october of 2011. since then it's recorded five incidents that each made headlines. problems ranging from electrical concerns in december to just yesterday when one of the 787s began leaking fuel on the ground at boston's logan airport. an aviation expert on the "today" show. you will hear from him in a moment. first we got feedback from passengers who said they were concerned by the news. >> they should test it better before they get people on it. >> i don't want to be on it until they get it fixed. >> i have confidence in the airplane. there are going to be teething problems with a new airplane. it's common. the first commercial aircraft made of light weight carbon composite. 21% less fuel than planes of similar size. waiting to hear back to see if they are makin

review of boeing's brand-new 787 dreamliner passenger jet. a news conference is also planned for later this morning. meanwhile, cbs 5 reporter anne makovec is at the san jose international airport where one of those plans will land this morning. >> reporter: good morning. these new reports certainly marring the celebration here at san jose's airport. the flight is set to leave from san jose headed straight to tokyo. this is a big debut flight. it's supposed to leave at 5 minutes before noon today. it is still on schedule. this is the first boeing 787 dreamliner aircraft to fly from the bay area. this model has been flying for over a year. around 4 a.m. today, the faa ordered a comprehensive review of critical systems in that model. this is video from a few hours ago in japan where one of the planes developed a cracked windshield. another one had a fuel leak. no passengers were injured. no serious consequences. but obviously, concerns. there was also a separate fuel leak and a fire reported on one of the aircrafts earlier this week. cbs av
